Flowers or Weeds?

"What is a weed?  A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered."   ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, Fortune of the Republic, 1878

My husband does not appreciate my flower gardens. Neither he nor I know exactly what species are growing in them during any given season. He considers them mostly weeds. I consider them all flowers. I have to watch him closely when he's busy with the weed-eater in order to make sure all of the flowers in my gardens survive. He came really close this summer to removing all my wild raspberry bushes. Fortunately, for him, me, and the raspberries, I happened to walk outside before he started. The strawberries are gone though.

And... so, let us a take a look at the children of God. Does He not normally call the least to be greatest; the last to be first? God does not discern things as mankind discerns things. He sees the full potential while we look at the short-comings and failings. "But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." Mark 10:30

Just because we don't have to buy those plants that others often consider weeds; does not mean that they don't have a good and useful purpose in the garden of God. They are indeed very valuable as they are free gifts from God Himself.

Do not consider the children of God to be mere weeds to be cast out of the garden. Only God can know what are true weeds and true flowers.

Luke 9:43b-48 Children Greatest

Luke 9:43-48 NIV
Jesus told his disciples, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest." (v. 48) So there you go...

Think about your daily life. Do you have children; grandchildren; nieces and nephews? How about children in your neighborhood; do children live next door to you? In thinking about your daily routine, are their needs a priority in your life or are you too busy thinking about yourself? I have seen, all too often, parents who are so engrossed in their "thing" that they push their own children to the side, to the bottom of their list rather than welcome them into their lives, into their daily activities. When this is done; not only are the children being pushed aside; but, Jesus is as well. Remember, that the one who is least is the greatest. Children are one of the greatest gifts of God. Welcome them. Love them. Care for and protect them.

What are you priorities? Who is your God? Do you love the little children even as He loves them?

Matthew 22:34-40 - Love

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’" (Matt 22:37-39 NIV)

Love - that's it in a nutshell. Once we begin to love, we no longer have to worry about what we do or do not do. Our love for God and others will direct us, with the help of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit. There will be peace. There will be reconciliation.

May God grant that each of us should be filled with His Holy Spirit, with His love.
