The Hammock Goes Unused Even On Vacation

 

Vacations are nice; but, don't be misled. Vacations can be very busy times. In fact, mine are usually so busy that there is rarely time to even write my morning blog!

There is a hammock in the backyard that has Spanish Moss hanging all over it. It has gone unused for years. I have thought about cleaning it up. But, then there would go any time I have to rest.... I have a feeling that my blogs throughout my vacation time will be very short.

"And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done." Genesis 2:2

Luke 10:38-42 Martha, Live Life!

I am married to a Martha. No, he doesn't busy himself preparing meals for me. But, he does prepare them for the residents at our Adult Foster Care. His Martha traits show when he is so busy taking care of little stuff (some of which does not ever have to be done) that he forgets to sit down and enjoy the people around him. He sometimes gets so busy doing "stuff" that he forgets to enjoy the gifts of the day. It's a learned trait, I believe. He had at least one aunt who was always doing busy work herself and finding busy work for him just so he would make an extra visit or two. His granddaughters have picked up on at least part of his habits. It seem like I am forever telling them to "live life" - "carpe diem" - "seize the day!"

Yes, there is an abundance of things to do and some of it is quite needful. But, there is nothing more needful than living in the presence of God. You can realize His presence by truly living in the presence of those around you and experiencing life with them.

Luke 9:28-36 Mountain Top Transfiguration

I've read the Holy Bible a few times now. Each reading brings more questions. One I'd like to ask about the mountain top experience of Peter, James and John is how they knew that the two men talking with Jesus were Moses and Elijah. There were no photographs in those days. Maybe, Jesus called them by name? That's just a question that runs through my mind every now and then...

Anyway, Peter, James, and John are pretty excited to see Jesus, Moses and Elijah talking together and to be there with them. They really don't know what to do. Peter wants to know if they should put up shelters for them - busy work, I guess. But, then "While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.  A voice came from the cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.'" (vss 34-35)

Listen to him! Listen to the Word of God.

Psalm 128 - Blessings of Work and Family

The blessings of the LORD.... In Psalm 128 the blessings relate to working hard and being prosperous; having a good wife (spouse) and having children.  Good things, all of them. But, they are things we often take for granted.

Today, it seems, a lot of people want to be prosperous without the work that is required to get there. Well, maybe not just today. I'm thinking it's probably part of our human condition. Scripture reminds us that those who don't work won't eat. Paul wrote, "For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies." (2 Thess 3:10,11 NIV) Apparently, wanting something for nothing (without working) has been around for a long time.

And, family....  Family is a blessing that sometimes we ignore. In the end what do we have except the love of those around us. Is there anything on this earth that is really more precious than that? Everything else will pass away, but love endures. Genuine love does not pass away. It does not fade into the sunset. It continues on. But, love only received and not returned is a very sad thing. When one person receives and cannot return the love of spouse or children it is a very sad thing for all. How sad it is when love is taken for granted.

How sad it is that our Father, in heaven, would love us so much to give His only begotten Son to die so that we might be reconciled in His love, and not be willing to receive and live in that love. How can one not love one who has died for them? Such a very sad thing... to live without the blessing of the love God has given us through His Son and through the people around us.
