God Help Us To be Fruitful

    

     "Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
     To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
     May grace and peace be yours in abundance in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."  2 Peter 1:1-8 NRSV

We are saved by God's grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ; yet, Peter reminds us that we should support that faith with such things as goodness and knowledge. It makes no sense whatsoever for us to have received this precious gift of faith if we do not live by that faith. We are to be fruitful laborers in that which He has called us.

God bless the works of our hands, the words of our lips and the meditations of our hearts and minds that all that we say and think and do will be acceptable in His sight and glorify Him.

Luke 4:31-44 - He Is Risen!

Luke 4:31-44 NIV
Jesus healed the sick and kicked out demons. The demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" (vs 41) The demons spread the word! Jesus told the people that he was sent to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God. Proclamation, that's what we're called to do. We are called to share the Good New of God through Jesus Christ our LORD. Even the demons did that.

It is Easter. This morning our proclamation is that He is Risen! He is risen from the dead so that all who believe in Him might live and not just live, but live in Him.

So, on this Holyday, what will be on our hearts and minds and our tongues? What will God's people be sharing with others? May all God's people share in this proclamation and not just in hearing, but in speaking this truth.

Hosea 11 - Help Us To Love The One Who Loves Us

“When Israel was a child, I loved him,
    and out of Egypt I called my son.
But the more they were called,
    the more they went away from me.
They sacrificed to the Baals    
    and they burned incense to images." (Hosea 11:1-2 NIV)

I'm thinking there are a lot of parents (and grandparents) who can relate to this. Sometimes, the more you love a child, the more they pull away. It's as though they honestly don't want to be loved. I don't get it. But, sometimes, it seems, that is the way it is. They wander off seeking love from those who do not, cannot, or will not love them instead of living in the warmth and love that is being freely given to them.

God loves us and calls us to be His children. So what is so difficult in living in His love?

May God help each and everyone of us to realize the great love He has for us. Open our eyes, Lord! Open our hearts, LORD! Help us to receive the love you have given us through Jesus Christ, our LORD. Amen.

Ezekiel 39 - Deliverance

God has promised deliverance. He has promised Israel deliverance from Gog and Magog. He will cause so much carnage to the invaders that the remains are declared a great feast for the birds and wild animals.

Through Jesus Christ, God has promised all who would believe in His Son deliverance from the hand of the enemy. Indeed it has already been accomplished for us, as His Son died on the cross and overcame the power of sin, death, and the devil. There are no enemies greater than these. "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36 NIV)

God has promised deliverance. He has freed you so that you can freely love and serve Him and your neighbor as yourself.

Lamentations 3 - His Compassion

"I am the man who has seen affliction
    by the rod of the Lord’s wrath.
He has driven me away and made me walk
    in darkness rather than light;
indeed, he has turned his hand against me
    again and again, all day long.
For no one is cast off
    by the Lord forever.
Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
    so great is his unfailing love.
For he does not willingly bring affliction
    or grief to anyone." (Lam 3:1-3,31-33 NIV)

The LORD has indeed shown us compassion. Although, we have turned our backs to Him and followed in ways we should not go; He has shown us compassion in that He sent His Son to be a sacrifice for our sin. In spite of the fact that His people have turned against Him, He desired that we might be reconciled to Him in His Kingdom. His will is that all should live in His presence. May God help us to follow in His way that we might know His loving mercy, through Jesus Christ, our LORD.

Jeremiah 1 - No Excuses

Moving on to a new book... Today, we begin reading Jeremiah.

Jeremiah was not exactly enthusiastic about being called as prophet of the LORD. After all, prophets can become pretty unpopular, pretty fast, and you have to make sure you're not making stuff up out of your own head. If you're called to proclaim God's Word, it better be God's Word you are proclaiming and not your own desires. It's really not a good idea to be running around saying "Thus says the LORD," if the LORD doesn't say it.

Jeremiah's response to the LORD calling him as a prophet was: “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” (Jer 1:6 NIV) Sound familiar? How many excuses can we create to not go and do what God would have us do? To not say what God would have us say? To not be what God would have us be? How many excuses have we made not to answer the call of God?

 

The Lord's responded to Jeremiah: “"Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord." (Jer 1:7-8)

 

Don't bother the LORD with excuses. He knows you and He knows the truth. Answering God's call is not always easy, as Jeremiah and multitudes of prophets, would attest. Not everyone is going to like what they hear and you will find a few more enemies along the way. But, God is with you. He will put His words in your mouth. He will rescue you.

Isaiah 12 - I Will Praise You, LORD

Into exile - out of exile. Over and over again, the people of God turn their back on Him, they go into exile, they repent, and receive grace, mercy, and a multitude of blessings in their return from the LORD. And... when they receive their freedom they rejoice.

So, too, will all people rejoice as they receive the salvation given to them through Jesus Christ, our LORD.

In that day you will say:

“I will praise you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned awayand you have comforted me." (Isa 12:1 NIV)

Isaiah 5 - Woe To Those Who Call Evil Good

A lot more woes, today, for the children of God, who have proven fruitless! There are consequences, it seems, for real world sin. There are consequences for those who have turned their backs on God and followed in their own ways. Isaiah uses a parable of a vineyard, to warn the people before it is too late and they suffer the consequences of their own greed and self-centeredness.

God has planted a vineyard. He planted it with the choices vines, but it has yielded for him only bad fruit. Woe says, the Word of God, through Isaiah to the children of God.

"Woe to those who call evil good

and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight.

Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine
and champions at mixing drinks,
who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
but deny justice to the innocent.
Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw
and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay
and their flowers blow away like dust;
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore the Lord’s anger burns against his people;
his hand is raised and he strikes them down."  (Isa 5:20-25 NIV)

Has anything changed since Isaiah's time? God's children suffer the consequences of their unfruitfulness, they repent, they turn to God, and then do it all over again. Will we ever learn? Over and over again, we do the same things that lead us into trouble, but so often we just never learn. Here's one - how about that drunk driver who either almost or does kill someone and; yet, refuses to acknowledge that he has a drinking problem so he's out there sneaking behind the wheel while he's intoxicated the first chance that he has when he thinks he won't be caught. Or... the prescription drug uses who abuses these "legal drugs" to the point that they can no longer care for their families appropriately. They use these "legal drugs" and then blame the fact that they are crabby or mean or neglectful of their family or maybe can't even work because they are sick when the reality is that they can't do these things because the "legal drugs" have made them sick. This illness we call addiction. Get help before you (and the people you love) suffer worse consequences than you already have. And, please don't try to justify your abuse of "legal drugs" by saying it's the only thing that helps. I hear this way too often, by way too many people. God knows better. I know better. You know better. Calling evil good is one of the things we are warned about by Isaiah. If it damages your body, mind, and spirit; if it damages your family, your relationships, how can it be called good? There are consequences for doing those things which we call good, but are not.

Prophecy (in the Old Testament) is not so much a prediction of what will come. It is more of a prediction (a warning) of what might come if something doesn't change. It doesn't have to be. Remember that no matter what we have done in the past, through faith in the redeeming power of the Son, Jesus the Christ, we are forgiven all the evil that we have done. You are forgiven, through Jesus the Christ and that alone should be cause enough to rejoice and return most fully to the LORD! We can change. With the help of God, we can be changed so that our lives are more fruitful. Give up on those desperate attempts to go against God's will - receive His love - His grace - His mercy - and live life!

Proverbs 12 - Seek Knowledge of What God Has Done

Today is the Sunday that we celebrate the Passion of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Yes, we also remember Jesus' final entrance into Jerusalem with the waving of palms. There is no sermon today. We hear the whole passion story according to the words of St. Luke. Through the knowledge of who Christ is and what he did (and does) for us, we are moved, we are turned to desire to know the will of God our Father for us. We seek His wisdom, even if it might mean a little (or a lot) of correction and discipline along the way. We seek the LORD's favor. We seek to be in His presence as we gather together to Worship Him, to learn about and remember what He has done.

In short... we come to Worship because we desire and love the knowledge and wisdom of the LORD. You're really not going to find it any place else, except in the Word.

Proverbs 9 - Correcting A Mocker

"Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.  Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. (Prov 9:7-9 NIV)

Believe me, I have received my share of insults by those who prefer not to walk on the straight path.  I have learned, over time that there are definitely times when it makes no sense to correct someone. If they are corrected they will only argue or through a temper tantrum. There are times when it seems that it is best just to walk away, say nothing. It is better to keep right on walking by rather than end up in a dispute that you will not win and then end up carrying the ill feelings that you gained during that discussion out into the rest of the world. The rest of the world doesn't deserve that.

There is a whole world out there that needs and desires to hear the Good News. Why allow a mocker or a wicked one, who refuses to hear, to steal the time that could be better used to help those who are wise enough not to refuse help?

I am not saying that there is never a time to correct a mocker or rebuke the wicked. Jesus certainly incurred insults. As Christians, so shall we. There are times when even the mocker should be corrected and the wicked rebuked. If there is danger to others, it definitely needs doing. These things must be done from time to time. Wisdom will help you know when the time is right. What I am trying to say is that focusing in on one who mocks the LORD, trying to drag them onto the path of righteousness should never become the center of your life. Do not allow scoffers to drag you down and off the path the LORD has prepared for you. That would not be wise. If they will not hear the truth, there are times when you should simply walk away, whether it is family, friend, or foe.  You can help no one, if your whole life is spent trying to help one whose whole goal is to drag you down into the muck and mire with them.

According to St. Matthew (10:14 NIV), Jesus said, "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet."

There is a whole world out that there yearning for some Good News, multitudes that need healing and actually desire it, that will listen and be made whole. Go... and proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom through Jesus Christ, our LORD. Go and proclaim the Good News to all people. But, remember it is the Word, who is Jesus the Christ, that saves not you or me. Once the Word has been shared, there is not much you can do for the mocker, but continue to pray for them and trust the Spirit of God to do what the Spirit does. Be careful that you do not become embroiled in thinking that with persistence you can save them. Wisdom will guide you as your remember that it is only Jesus who saves.

Psalm 139 - The LORD Sees You

"O Lord, you have searched me and known me." (Psalm 139:1 NIV)

Don't be trying to hide from God! It won't work. You can try to hide who you are or what you do from your neighbors or your family or your friends. They may even buy into the mask you wear. But, God does not.  He discerns your every thought, your every move. He is with you even now. He is with you every moment of every day no matter where you might be. He sees you. He knows you.

Return to the LORD, for He is merciful to all who have fallen away. Return and do what is good in His sight for the sake of the one who died that we might be forgiven and live life eternally in His presence.

Psalm 49 - Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Property

I went shopping with my son and grandchildren last night.  It was a rather pleasant experience.  I never heard this once:  "Buy me ......" I think I should go with my son more often.  Either his presence keeps them from asking me for stuff or maybe they're asking him!  Of course, there is always the possibility that there is nothing left to "buy" them. There is nothing left that they really want.  That would be a really good thing.  Is it too much to hope for?

I have spent many a year trying to get them to understand that wasting one's life in the pursuit of having everything that all of the neighbors have is really a waste of one's life.  There are many more fulfilling things to do with our lives than to fill our homes with clutter that we don't really want - stuff that will just sit on shelves in need of dusting.  Things... stuff.... clutter... they will not bring you happiness.  It is much better to seek those things which will.  Seek ye first the kingdom of God.

Hopefully, we have all heard the phrase: "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," found in the United States Declaration of Independence.  But, did you know that Thomas Jefferson's draft was actually "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Property"?  In their wisdom, our forefather's changed it.  Someone must have figured out that happiness is far better than property and that property does not necessarily lead to happiness.

What can property buy you?  Only more things and in this world today, higher taxes.  Actually, owning property is not a bad thing in and of itself.  It depends on how it is used.  Rich or poor, is it used for the glory of God? 

But, the constant pursuit of wealth, simply because we want what our neighbors want is not a good thing. Psalm 49 warns us that no matter how much money we have, it is not enough to save our lives.  There is not enough ransom that we can pay to redeem the life of another.  Everyone will die. Rich and poor alike will die.

"This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself. Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them." (vs 13-17 NIV)

Money will not buy you happiness.  Money will never buy you eternal life.  It cannot be used as a ransom for your life.  One more scripture for to think about this morning concerning the one and only who is able to ransom your life - who is able - when you die - to rise you up in the morning.

"Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—  just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  (Matt 25-28)

Do not trust in money, in property, in your own power or prestige.  For happiness, for joy, for peace that surpasses all understanding, (Philippians 4:7) trust in the LORD, your God.  Trust in you LORD, Jesus the Christ.  There is only one way to eternal life.  Money cannot buy it.  Jesus is the way. Your life has been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ.  Seek first His Kingdom!

Psalm 32 - Blessed is the Confessee

"Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered." (Psalm 32:1 NIV)

Confession, today, is quite a different animal than it was years ago.  I probably only hear, at the most, a dozen direct confessions a year.  I hear many more than that indirectly, though.  They start out with a simple conversation and all of a sudden I realize that I am hearing someone's confession.  This is a good thing!  When I hear them, whether they were intentional confessions in a more traditional fashion (that is, someone asking me to hear their confession) or whether the confession just happens during conversation, they receive prayer and absolution. They are reminded that their transgressions are forgiven.  They are reminded that their sins are covered by the blood of Christ.

Sadly, I don't hear as many confessions today as could or should be heard.  Recently, I have had a couple of people tell me that they have forgiven me.  We were, in a loose sense, reconciled. But, sadly, these people never confessed their own sins.  They continue to live in turmoil.  The world is out to get them. They are right. Everyone else is wrong. They will most likely continue in the chaos they have created for themselves for a very long time; at least until they can recognize the sin that has come to inhabit their lives.  Sadly, no repentence. No confession. No absolution.

You see, if we cannot confess our sins, then we have a bit of trouble accepting the forgiveness that God so freely has given us through the death of His Son.  It's not that God will not forgive you. It's more a matter of you wanting to be forgiven.  After all, if one is perfect, than you have no need of forgiveness.  Jesus told the Pharisees:  “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matt 9:12-13 NIV)

We are all sinners.  "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." (1 John 1:8) But, the good news is that Jesus came that our transgressions might be forgiven.  Jesus came that we might be sanctified and reconciled to God our Father and to one another in the Kingdom of God.  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matt 4:17)

Dear one, confess your sins, receive the forgiveness that is given to you through Body and Blood of our LORD, Jesus Christ. "Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered."

Psalm 31 - Worthless Idols

I went to bed last night and woke again this morning thinking about the worthless idols that people whom I love worship.  It is very sad to know that rather than God, people that I care about would worship these inanimate objects.  Even sadder is the fact that they don't realize that they are doing this, so there is no repentance.  They cannot change until they see the light. 

I have been told more times than I can count: "I believe. That is enough."  But, what do you believe?  Do you believe that the money you're trying to win gambling online is going to save you?  It's more likely to bury you.  And... even if you do win, will it really bring you happiness?  Why do you waste the hours, the days, the life that God has given you to such worthless pursuits? Do you really believe that the drugs (even if they are legal prescriptions) and the alcohol are going to bring you peace?  What's up with that, anyway?  Has all sense departed this world?

God has given us and continues to give us an abundance of gifts. But, we set them aside to pursue things of this world.  What's up with that?

David wrote in the Psalm today:  "I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the Lord."  (vs 6 NIV) Unlike David, I do not hate those who cling to worthless idols.  Rather, I pray for those who have fallen into the trap of worshipping them, to their own demise.  They will not know peace until they turn to the LORD.  And... living without the peace of God is not a place I'd wish upon anyone.

May God help us all to worship the one true God and receive the blessings He has so richly given us through Jesus Christ, our LORD and Saviour. 

How abundant are the good things that God has stored up for those who fear Him, that He bestows in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in Him! (vs 19)

Psalm 20 - Relief From Distress

"May the LORD answer you when you are in distress." (vs 1 NIV)  So often we wonder, what can I do to be relieved of this distress I'm in?  There is no formula that works all the time, for everyone.  There is no formula to be found in this world that will endure. 

There is only one place that we can go to; there is only one to whom we can turn so that our distress is relieved.  It doesn't do us any good to trust in the strength of this world or ourselves to relieve us of our suffering.  As verse 7 tells us:  "Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God."  God is the only one who can truly deliver us from our suffering.  He is the only one who can grant us true peace. 

The bottom line is that for those who follow in the way of the LORD, this peace, this reconciliation with God our Father, through our Saviour, Jesus Christ, is the desire of our hearts and it is the answer to our distress.  No matter what is going on around us in this world, as long as we are reconciled to God, through the blood of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we will know His peace and we will shout for joy over the victory won for us through Jesus Christ, our LORD.

May the LORD fill the desire of your heart and grant you His peace.  Pr. J

Job 40 - 41 - God Is Our Defense

At long last, Job has figured out that he has nothing to say in his defense.  He is not God.

In this discourse between the LORD and Job, the LORD continues to remind Job who He is.  In humility, Job is getting it. 

One of the mosts intriguing figures, for me, in scripture is Leviathan, that great sea monster.  At least, that's what I think Leviathan is. It appears to be a creature so amazing that no man can conquer it. And, God reminds Job of this.  There are many things in this world that man cannot conquer without the help of God.  I remind you, again, this morning that God is God.  There is only one God and it is not us.  We have no defense for acting like gods.  The only defense when we stand before the judge of all the earth is God, Himself.  It is only His love and His mercy given to us through Jesus Christ that finds us righteous. God is our defense.

1 Chronicles 4 - Prayer of Jabez

Among the descendents of Judah, is one Jabez.  In the middle of the list of Judah's descendents is a description of this one obscure son.  He is born in pain.  He is a humble man who prays to the God of Israel, "Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might nt bring me pain!" (4:10) God answered his prayer.  It does not say how.  It just says he answered this prayer.

Now, I'm thinking the fact that he prayed for these things and God answered has to be pretty important; otherwise, wide would this man's prayer be placed in the middle of this genealogy?  I have heard many critiques of this prayer.  Yet, I pray it often for others, whom I love.  It is a simple prayer.  Jabez asked God to bless him, to keep him from harm and to enlarge his borders or territories.  The critique I've often heard is that the enlarging territories is about riches.  Some would turn Jabez' humble prayer into a selfish prayer. 

However, for the Christian our borders are on the mission field.  We do not look at this prayer with a magical means to fill our pockets, but a prayer that God would bless us with missions, with outreach to the whole world.  Here and why we would wish our borders to be expanded. 

Who would not want their loved ones to be blessed by the LORD, to be kept from harm and know no pain and to have ever expanding borders to proclaim the praises of God?  Oh, LORD, expand our territory so that we might reach out to even more, to the multitudes, with the Good News of your Kingdom, through Jesus Christ, our LORD.

2 Samuel 13 - Consequences Suffered By All

The rape of Tamar, a horrible sin... But, it does not go without consequences. Two years, Tamar's brother Absalom waits to avenge his sister. I'm not sure why he waited. It's not as if he was planning to keep this a secret. If he was, he didn't do a very good job of planning. And one man's lust brings hardship and consequences to his whole family.

Tamar is shamed. She lives a desolate woman in the house of her brother, Absalom. David is angry, but he doesn't do anything about it. Absalom commits murder and ends up running away (for 3 years) to avoid those consequences. David has now lost 2 sons because of Amnon's lust. But, David does nothing. He just sits there missing them.

There are consequences for sin. Our sin affects the people around us, the people whom we love and the people whom we don't love. Today is the Palm Sunday/the Sunday of the Passion. At the beginning of the service we sing Hosannah's and by the end we will have crucified him. It is a reminder that we are sinful beings and that this Jesus, who loved us, was willing to pay the price for our sins. He forgave us and was willing to accept the consequence - the sentence of death - for us - for our sins.

I woke up this morning wondering who I would see participating in the liturgy this morning. I had a nightmare about some lost sheep. I wondered if those sheep who have gone astray have any clue of the consequences of their wandering. I wondered if they understood that Jesus died because they would - we would - all go astray. Jesus paid the penalty, yet, we find ourselves immersed in negative consequences because we have strayed. The Body of Christ given for you has been rejected by those who have strayed... We become as desolate as Tamar... Out of fear, we run like Absalom, not so much from anyone but to the world which has its own set of consequences... And, when we run off, we neglect to hear the story, the promises of what God grace through Jesus Christ, and what is more, our children never hear about how much God loves them. If they hear the stories at all, they hear them through a secular view, not from a scriptural view, not through the lens of the cross. So what consequences do parent expect will come from that? We are saved by faith alone in Christ alone. If our children do not know Christ then in whom do they believe?

Ok, I recognize that I have a definite bias at times.. so I must admit that prior to being a Pastor, my last position was a substance abuse counselor who practiced cognitive behavior therapy (as well as 12-steps) and so sometimes I look at thinks with that bias, especially when it comes to consequences.
